It’s been 7 years last month since I’ve had the surgery. I’ve had no complications, I’ve had several fills, I haven’t had a fill in I don’t believe in 2 years, 3 years – I’ve not gained any weight back. It takes you a good 2 to 3 years to change your mindset, how you think about eating.

How did you feel about being overweight?

A couple of years before I had the band I just given up. I felt it added too much stress in my life thinking about dieting and trying to do it, and working 12 hour shifts as a nurse it just wasn’t working for me. So I had just abandoned it and gained more weight. And dreaded going to any doctor’s appointment because I knew the first thing going to be out of their mouth, you need to lose weight. And with that weight came a lot of other health problems: high blood pressure, depression, joint pain, back pain, low energy, low exercise tolerance, high cholesterol.

What did you decide to do about your weight finally?

So I decided on the lap band, and then when I found out my insurance company wouldn’t pay for it it’s kind of like – I thought that was just going to be another thing, okay so we’re not going to have anything done so let’s forget this. And then my husbands the one that said look, you just spent 50 thousand something dollars for a brand new car isn’t your health more important? Then pay for it, let’s just take the money out of savings and pay for it and get it done. And I had never thought of it in those terms. Because actually it was the road to make me healthier, give me the self-confidence I needed, feel good about myself, have the energy levels I need as I’m getting older and just all around able to enjoy my grandkids. Go shopping, do anything.

What was your experience with bariatric surgery?

I think I had my surgery on Wednesday and I was back at work Friday. Did not have to take pain medication.

What results did you achieve after your bariatric surgery?

I lost 100 pounds* the first year. After that I’m within 10 pounds of goal now.

Did you experience changes in your health?

I don’t take those medications anymore so my primary physician is delighted, and he constantly comments on my weight when I go in. He thinks it’s great. I would never want to give up the band. If there was something wrong with this band I would want it replaced with another.
